Magnitude Rub Shoulders with Web Celebs In “New York! New York!”

Webbys

After finding out about our double win at this year’s Webbys, myself (Steph), Jude and Sam aka Tony’s Angels thought it would only be polite to jet off and attend the internet’s most glamorous night of the year…The 12th Annual Webby Awards…in NEW YORK!….it’s a tough job but someone’s got to do it.

It really was a star studded night, attended by some of the most influential people within the industry including…

Hal Trencher – Vice President, National Sales, Sports and Music at YahooHal Trencher_Yahoo

Tom Arrix – Vice President of Sales at FacebookTom Arrix Facebook

Josh Mooney – Chief Marketing Officer at Juxt Interactive, (the guys behind BMW’s award-winning digital campaigns)Josh Juxt

and musician Will.i.am from The Black Eyed Peas whose internet videos for US presidential hopeful Barack Obama gained him the Artist of the Year award at this year’s Webbys.

…we even had time during our visit to meet the locals…New York Policeman

Statue of Liberty

Right, now for the serious and sentimental bit…

The whole Webby experience is one that I doubt Magnitude will ever forget. From being nominated and being up against the biggest restaurant chain in the world, to winning two awards and being officially recognised as part of the industry elite – none of this would have been possible if if wasn’t for out amazing team at Magnitude and of course the judges and everyone who voted. It really is a great honour and proves that even a small North Yorkshire-based digital agency can have global success, so a huge THANK YOU to everyone!

And in the words of Jude at the Webbys…”Long reign the bloody internet!”

Let there be lite….flash lite!

This is my first blog, and it’s been a long time coming. I hope it’s worth it…

I’ve always been interested in Flash Lite but following Adobe’s recently press release I thought I’d take another look.

For those in digital, Flash lite has been around for a while. For everyone else Flash Lite is a way of playing flash animations, games and all a whole load of other things on your mobile phone or PDA that you’ve probably never heard of.

The bad news? The reason that most people won’t have heard of it is that mobile phone manufacturers don’t include Flash Lite at the moment so most handsets don’t support it.

The good news? Adobe has recently started talks with the major phone manufacturers (Nokia, Sony Ericsson, LG, Samsung and more) and is in the process of convincing, begging and bribing them to include their software on new handsets.

This is great news for digital marketing and all the people that use it. It means that the flash animations, games and all the other lovely stuff we build can now be adapted to use on mobile phones.

Personally I’m looking forward to the challenges that planning, designing and building for a new platform is going to bring. It opens up the work we do to a whole new range of consumers so thousands more people can see what we’re capable of. It also means loads of new ideas for our clients.

With all this in mind it may still be some time (probably until your contract runs out) until you get a handset that can support Flash Lite, so most people won’t be able to take advantage. Some manufacturers are bizarrely adding flash lite on some handsets and excluding it from newer models, so it’ll probably be a while until the playing field, so to speak, levels out.

But never one to waste time and always ahead of the game, I’ve created Magnitude’s first Flash Lite game. Basing it on the premise that all phones are different, but a keypad is pretty much universal we’ve built a brain boggling maths game that only uses the keypad.

Magnitude’s Mobile Mini Mathmites game invites you to test your brain by adding up small numbers in under 60 seconds. With the power of flash lite you can download a desktop game (exe), a flash lite (swf) file for your mobile or play it on a webpage. …well that was my first blog. I hope you liked it,

Can I get a ‘hell yeah’?!

Before Friday comes to a close and the bank holiday cometh, just wanted to give a round of old school ‘hell yeahs’ for our dedicated developers, designers, account / project managers and all round good guys for working so hard on the wagamama global CMS and new site.
It’s a feat of gargantuan proportions and has involved a lot of patience, effort and late nights (and weekends away from new born Nelsons – muchos respect Neil) but we are finally at the end and we’re proud to say it is looking good and working right!
So although there are still a couple of hours still left as the site is sent live – just wanted to say thanks from me and please (everyone who has been involved) have lots of drinks this weekend to celebrate as this is something to be proud of!

What makes Magnitude the ‘bee’s knees’?

In light of our recent Webby wins, I wanted to educate all of you out there who don’t know who we are yet, why we are so darn-tootin cool! Read on for a case study in the domesticated honey bee colonies of Europe and their appealing lower extremity joints in comparison to one Harrogate-based agency. Hoo-rar! Read more…
